Brussels Effect

The Brussels Effect describes how rules that the EU formally applies to its internal market can become de facto global standards because of the economic size and attractiveness of the EU market. The concept concerns the external influence of market rules, rather than a formal extension of those rules to every country. In an industrial archive, the concept is useful for tracking how EU requirements influence production models, market access and commercial practices beyond the EU. It should be distinguished from CBAM itself: the Brussels Effect describes the broader global regulatory influence, while CBAM is a specific EU border mechanism discussed in this article.
