The hydrogen era in green steel: Tosyalı's flexible DRI plant in Algeria begins production

Tosyalı Holding announced the start of commercial production at its second DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) plant in Algeria. Thanks to its advanced technology, the facility has the capacity to operate on both natural gas and, with a minor modification, 100 percent hydrogen. This feature earned it the distinction of being the world's first FlexiDRI plant to reach commercial production.

At a time when the decarbonisation race in the steel sector is gaining speed, Tosyalı's move has positioned the company ahead of its European competitors. During the same period, several European firms had publicly announced flexible DRI investment decisions. However, Tosyalı Holding was the first company to turn that decision into an investment and reach the production stage.

The capacity to operate on hydrogen is the most decisive element enhancing the plant's future flexibility. Considering the weight of green steel production on the global agenda, Tosyalı's investment in Algeria establishes a reference point in the sector. With this technology that enables the transition from natural gas infrastructure to hydrogen-based production, the company is both keeping current production costs under control and positioning itself to be ready for low-carbon steel demand.

Tosyalı Holding's Algeria operations form one of the fundamental pillars of the company's international growth strategy. With the second DRI plant coming online, Tosyalı has further strengthened its production capacity in North Africa.
